Choosing NHS or bpas self funded treatment

Some women choose bpas because they prefer the idea of a specialist clinic with staff who have chosen to work in abortion care. These women may prefer not to involve their GP or NHS family planning service. You can contact bpas and make an appointment for private treatment without delay, with no need to visit your local GP first.

Can I have an NHS funded abortion, carried out by bpas?
Yes. bpas has special arrangements to carry out abortions on behalf of certain NHS services. Speak to our contact centre on 08457 30 40 30 to find out if this is an option for you.

Contacting the NHS
Alternatively you can make an appointment with your own GP or family planning service, who will be able to explain what abortion services are available locally, both within the NHS and privately.

Your doctor will normally refer you for a consultation appointment at a local hospital or a specialist clinic to confirm the stage of your pregnancy, talk about the different treatment options and arrange an appointment for an abortion.

How much will I have to pay?
Your doctor will advise you about the local situation. If you are not eligible for an NHS abortion, or if you choose not to have treatment through the NHS, bpas can treat you as a non-NHS patient. Click here to see bpas price list.

How long will I have to wait?
This varies, depending where you live. Normally, an appointment should be arranged for your initial consultation within five days of your request. You will then be offered another appointment for the actual abortion, usually within a week of your first consultation.

What if my doctor won't help?
If your own doctor is unsympathetic, or refuses to refer you for an abortion on grounds of conscience, you are entitled to contact another GP or a doctor at a family planning clinic, who should be able to provide you with the same information.

The General Medical Council, the national body responsible for GPs, has made it clear that doctors are obliged to make sure that their 'personal beliefs' do not prejudice patient care.
