Ann Furedi, the Chief Executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, bpas, and author of the Moral Case for Abortion, will be honoured with the 2017 Felicia Stewart Preserving Core Values in Science Award at an international conference of health professionals this weekend.
The award has been granted to Ann Furedi by the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals in honour of her two decades of outstanding multinational work on abortion and reproductive justice. Furedi runs the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, bpas, a charity which provides reproductive healthcare, from contraception to abortion care, to 70,000 women a year in the UK on a not-for-profit basis. Before working at bpas, Furedi was Director of Policy and Communications for the UK regulator of infertility treatment and embryo research, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), and prior to that was a journalist.
The award is being presented at the North American Forum on Family Planning in Atlanta on Sunday 15th October.
Ann Furedi commented:
“I am so proud to be honoured in this way by such an influential American organisation. Moral values are at the core of abortion work. At bpas, we honour and respect women’s reproductive choice because we trust women. We know that women are the ones best placed to make decisions about their own lives and their own bodies.
“There is nothing more immoral than forcing a woman to have a child against her will. The Moral Case for Abortion explains why the lives we choose to make for our selves, and our capacity to do this, are as important to our humanity as our DNA.
It’s about time we put the values of woman’s autonomy and self-determination at the heart of society’s moral agenda. No society that claims to be civilised can deny women control over their bodies.”
