The 1967 Abortion Act is 50 years old next year. Over half a century, millions of women have had abortions in Britain.
Sadly in 2016 abortion care remains a stigmatised field of work, with the threat of prosecution and the anti-abortion movement ever present. And, unbelievably, women in Northern Ireland and Ireland are still forced to travel to access care.

Those women were supported by thousands of doctors, nurses and midwives who dedicated their lives to help women when they need it most. BPAS would like to honour the contribution of these medical professionals by sharing the messages and stories of the women they helped and supported.

If you’ve had an abortion in Britain, however recent or long ago, please write a message or letter to the doctors, nurses, midwives, or counsellors who you felt helped you and share it with us. Abortion is a difficult decision for some, but it allows women to move forward and live the life they believe is right. On the anniversary of the Abortion Act we will acknowledge the role staff working in abortion services have played in enabling British women to do this over the last 50 years.

The stories will be collated for publication but not sent directly to staff. If you would like to include where you had an abortion please do but it’s not essential.
