New figures released today by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) show that in 2022, 65 women travelled from Scotland to England to access abortion care that is not provided within Scotland. This is an increase of 55% on 2021 and the highest number since before the pandemic.

Following the decision of the Court of Appeal to release a woman sentenced to prison for ending her own pregnancy, Clare Murphy, Chief Executive of BPAS makes a statement.

The Department of Health shows an increase of 17% in the number of abortions in England and Wales. BPAS cited financial pressures, including “the impact of interest rate hikes and the huge increase in the cost of living”, as leading to continued high need among women.

The CQC has today published a report into the well-led aspects of the national BPAS service. This report raises some concerns around governance and oversight at our organisation centrally that we are taking action to address. 

Women and their babies deserve world-class, safe maternity care. The relatively high rate of stillbirth in this country remains a key concern, and must be addressed.
