BPAS comment on bill to legalise abortion in Argentina

We are pleased that Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez has tabled a bill to legalise abortion in Congress. Currently, abortion is only legally available within Argentina in cases of rape or when the woman’s life is at risk.

The bill will legalise abortion, ending the criminalisation of women and girls and guarantee them the right to access safe abortions. We thoroughly believe that all women and girls need to be able to access safe, legal abortion care. As we know, women’s need for abortions does not go away without proper abortion services, this only drives abortion care underground or abroad.

We cannot, and will not, be complacent about reproductive rights. We hope to see a step towards the right side of history for Argentina.
