“Some research really does move our understanding of embryo development forward. This fascinating study by Kathy Niakan’s group is one such example.
“The team has shown that in human embryos the first lineage differentiation event occurs at the morula stage of embryo development. They demonstrate that at this stage the outer cells of the embryo initiate the molecular process of placenta formation. Understanding the initial steps of placental cells differentiation is crucial, since problems in placental function like placental insufficiency can affect the development of the foetus and lead to problems later on in pregnancy. These exciting findings are very relevant to our understanding of early human embryo development and placenta formation, and have the potential to lead to improvements in fertility treatments in the future.”
