bpas statement on MSI temporary suspension of some services and reassurance for women needing care

Marie Stopes International (MSI) has informed bpas that it is temporarily unable to provide abortion care after 12 weeks gestation to women living in many areas of London. MSI will honour existing bookings for clients in these areas, but new appointments will not be made. bpas staff will do everything possible to ensure any woman needing these services is cared for, but it may mean there is a longer wait than usual for treatment. It will also mean that our Booking and Information Centre will be unusually busy as women who would have been treated by MSI are directed to bpas, and it may take longer for all calls to be answered.  We ask women for their patience at what we know can be a very stressful time, but to rest assured that we will do our utmost to provide the services and support they need.

MSI has also informed bpas that during this period they will be unable to provide care for any women who do not have NHS funding, which will primarily affect women from Ireland and Northern Ireland. Again, existing appointments will be honoured by MSI. As a result of this temporary suspension there may unfortunately be an increase in waiting times for women from ROI and NI for appointments with bpas. In order to enable us to take care of everyone in a timely manner, women may be offered appointments at a number of bpas clinics around the UK.  bpas will work to support women who are struggling with the increased travel costs as a result.

Women can contact our Booking and Information Centre on 03457 30 40 30, 24 hours a day
