bpas statement on press coverage of BBC Panorama: "The Great Abortion Divide"

Doctors and women are complying with the current abortion law. The law can, quite properly, be interpreted to allow for the abortion of unintended pregnancy but bpas would welcome a more modern law that reflects the widely held belief that women should be able to make decisions about themselves, for themselves.

The Abortion Act is 40 years old, and at the time was groundbreaking, but times have changed. People now expect to plan if, and when, they have children. Women take motherhood seriously and expect to have the opportunity to choose abortion when contraception lets them down. It is also worth noting that abortion rates and "repeat" abortion rates in this country are in keeping with those in comparable European countries such as France and Sweden.
